The MCSO's sweep occurred via the state's employer sanctions law that goes after businesses who hire illegal immigrants. Deputies targeted businesses in Surprise and Peoria with the MCSO arresting some undocumented workers.

Arpaio also was upset that U.S. Justice Department investigators were present in command post areas reserved for the media. The USDOJ is investigating the MCSO for its sweeps and whether they unfairly target Hispanics. Arpaio told local TV news that the Justice Department officials should not have been in the media areas.
The federal government has changed the 287(g) agreement it has with Arpaio to limit his arrests of illegal immigrants to only for those being processed at county jails.
Arpaio says he will continue to enforce immigration laws via state laws aimed at human smuggling and businesses that hire illegal immigrants.
