2 Fresno-area residents indicted for producing fraudulent identity documents

FRESNO, Calif. - Two Fresno-area residents have been indicted by a federal grand jury for producing and selling counterfeit immigration and identity documents as a result of an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Maria Ines Rangel-Lemus, 55, of Strathmore, Calif., and Cesar Perez Sanchez, 38, of Earlimart, Calif., are named in a multiple count indictment charging them with conspiracy, possession, transfer, production, and sale of fraudulent United States immigration and Social Security identification documents. The two, who face a maximum sentence of up to15 years in prison, are scheduled to appear before a U.S. magistrate judge June 17.

Border Patrol Shooting 2010 Adds to Immigration Debate.  The shooting at the Mexican border has added some more fire to the immigration debate.  A fifteen year old Mexican was gunned down by US Border Patrol agents last week, adding fuel to the already explosive immigration debate.  Sergio Adrian Hernandez Guereca is the name of the victim.

At Convention, Texas GOP Passes Immigration Plank Similar to Arizona Law

Fired-up Republican activists in no mood for compromises threw out their party chairwoman Saturday, then bucked Texas Gov. Rick Perry by pushing for a crackdown on illegal immigration similar to Arizona's new law. Some delegates at the Republican state convention also called for a nonbinding resolution calling on House Republicans to oust their own speaker, Rep. Joe Straus of San Antonio, considered too moderate for many of the bedrock conservatives meeting in Dallas this weekend. Convention organizers ruled the Straus resolution out of order.

Advocates protest US immigration fee hikes

SAN FRANCISCO - Immigrant rights advocates said the proposed fee increases by US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) send a message to immigrants that they are not wanted here. “Things like these fee increases are only going to further discourage the sentiment that immigrants are a major part of this country,” said Terry Valen of the Filipino Community Center. The USCIS plans to increase fees on permanent residency, also known as green card applications.

More laws have been enacted to help immigrants than restrict them

Despite recent national attention on such laws as the Arizona measure aimed at cracking down on illegal immigrants, a study released Monday by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars shows that across the country, more laws expanding immigrants' rights are enacted than those contracting them. The study, "Context Matters: Latino Immigrant Civic Engagement in Nine U.S. Cities," found that areas long accustomed to an influx of immigrants, including close-in jurisdictions of the Washington region, tend to focus more on trying to accommodate them rather than restrict them.
